SUBANG JAYA, Jan 8 — Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim challenged Selangor Umno today to support amendments to the state constitution if it was sincere in upholding the royal institution.
The Selangor mentri besar plans to call for an emergency sitting of the state assembly in a bid to end the impasse over Datuk Mohd Khusrin Munawi’s appointment as the new state secretary.
But Pakatan Rakyat (PR), which holds 35 seats in the 56-seat assembly, is three seats shy of a two-thirds majority necessary to amend laws.
“Umno (says it) has high regard for the Sultan. They (say they) uphold the monarchy.
“So, you put your money where your mouth is,” Khalid (picture) said.
Selangor Umno deputy chief Datuk Seri Noh Omar, however, has hinted that Barisan Nasional (BN) would not support Khalid’s move to amend the constitution.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has said Mohd Khusrin’s appointment was legitimate and pleaded for Khalid’s administration to co-operate with the former Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) director.
Today, Khalid also lambasted his predecessor Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo for not “solving the problem” during his administration.
“No way the state has no power,” said Khalid.
The former Selangor mentri besar, however, has agreed with Putrajaya that the right to appoint the state’s top civil servant resides with Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan.
Sidek also said the Selangor constitution did not require him to consult the state government when making such an appointment.
He further claimed that the Sultan’s consent to Mohd Khusrin’s appointment was merely an act of “courtesy”.
Shah Alam has locked horns with Putrajaya since Sidek announced Mohd Khusrin’s appointment on December 27.
The state has insisted that it can pick its own man for the job and rejected the former Jais director, who is known to be at odds with Khalid’s administration. - Malaysian Insider
