KAJANG, June 19 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim asserted his Islamic credentials today when he told Muslim youths to remain steadfast to the high standards of morality expounded in the Qur’an if they wish to become agents of change.
Charged again with sodomy and linked to a sex video, Anwar(picture) advised youths to go beyond cursory understanding of the holy text and instil in themselves the virtuous idealism that was the hallmark of young Muslims in the early days of Islam.
The PKR de facto leader pointed out that true understanding of Islam’s core values was needed to build conviction that will enable youths to stand up to corruption and poor governance without wavering in their duty as the “conscience of the majority”.
“(Youths are) those who have conviction in truth and the greatness of God who won’t bow to cruel leaders or be swayed by money,” Anwar told some 300 students at Kolej Dar-Hikmah here.
“This is called idealism, the courage of conviction — and for them Allah will point the way.”
The former head of the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) added that youths were unique because the knowledge that God was greater than the power of despotic leaders was “chiseled in their hearts”.
He added that youths should also study politics and economics and question all they learn so that they will not be taken in by unconvincing explanations by the government and its institutions.
Political parties are scrambling to get some four million eligible voters on the electoral rolls, most of whom are young Malaysians who did not bothered to register after turning 21, ahead of possible snap polls later this year.
The Najib administration called on youths to defend Putrajaya from the opposition at a mammoth rally in the administrative capital late last month.
