Impromptu speaker's corner lands students in trouble

Five student activists were detained by police while engaged in an impromptu speaker's corner in Labuan town this afternoon.

"At around 2pm, the group was having a speaker's corner and distributing fliers when a man suddenly appeared and snatched their banner.

"He then called the police on them," Pro-Mahasiswa student activists Azrul Azizi told Malaysiakini when contacted later.

Azrul said the group did not know the man nor had they provoked anyone in anyway.

"It was just to introduce the Gerakan Mahasiswa PRU13 (13th General Election Undergraduate's Movement) as we just launched it.

"It was to explain about the movement, there were no speeches about issues or any campaigning," he said.

Al-Mughni Shah JabranThe students from Labuan campus of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) had their identity cards and mobile phones confiscated by the police, said Azrul.

"They have been brought to the Labuan police station to have their statement recorded.

"We do not know their status now, they have yet to be released," he said.

Labuan UMS pro-Mahasiswa chairperson Al-Mughni Shah Jabran (right) is also among those detained.
The others detained are Fatima Ali, Ibnihar Amat, Mohamad Azilah and Sakinah Yusuf.
