PM Najib to announce RCI on Lahad Datu intrusion

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said that the prime minister will announce the formation of another royal commission of inquiry (RCI) in Sabah - this one to investigate the Lahad Datu intrusion.

The announcement will be made in conjunction with Police Day celebrations on Monday, according to national news agencyBernama.

NONEAccording to Hishammuddin, although the announcement has yet to be made, the Home Ministry is already working with foreign intelligence agencies to uncover the culprits behind the intrusion.

“The Philippine National Intelligence Coordinating Agency has a close working relationship with our Special Branch. We get the latest intelligence regarding the involvement of third parties besides information on (self-proclaimed Sultan Jamalul Kiram III’s) group,” he reportedly said.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had previously pledged to investigate alleged links between the insurgents and Malaysianopposition politicians.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III meanwhile had previously claimed that Jamalul’s armed expedition was funded by critics of his administration and vowed to bring them to justice.

Jamalul’s spokespersons on the other hand have denied any conspiracy and claimed the operation was self-funded.

There is already another ongoing RCI in Sabah to investigate allegations of a citizenship-for-votes scheme that uses illegal immigrants to skew the Sabah’s demographics in BN’s favour.

Though initially the commission is to be wrapped up by this month, it was given up to September to complete its probe.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin also reportedly expressed hope that former Sabah Chief Minister Harris Salleh would produce evidence to back his allegations of police power abuse against the Sabah Sulu community to prevent the issue from being politicised.

Bernama also states that Hishammuddin announced seven new police stations and five Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Centres under the newly established East Sabah Security Command (Esscom).

Meanwhile Home Ministry would bolster the capabilities of several agencies under it such as the Marine Police, General Operations Force, VAT69 police commandoes, and Special Actions Unit in order to tackle security threats in East Sabah.
