WHAT ABOUT DEEPAK, AMERICK, CECIL? Probe on Bala's SD2 only if there's fresh evidence - IGP

WHAT ABOUT DEEPAK, AMERICK, CECIL? Probe on Bala's SD2 only if there's fresh evidence - IGP
Police will only re-open investigation on allegations that private investigator P Balasubramaniam was coerced into making a false statutory declaration (SD) if there were fresh evidence, said inspector-general of police Ismail Omar.

However, Ismail said the police will not entertain the matter if it was merely being rehashed in another way.

"If there are people who come forward with fresh evidence, we will investigate. But if it is old story said in a different way, then we will not entertain," said the police chief.

He pointed out the police had already investigated the matter previously and submitted it to the Attorney-General's Chambers, which decided not to press charges due to lack of evidence.

"If you have new evidence that we don't know yet, then come forward. We will act according to the law, but don't talk about the same thing... it's the same thing," he said.

Balasubramaniam's lawyer Americk Sidhu had on March 16 at the Bar Council annual general meeting claimedthat senior lawyer Cecil Abraham admitted to being instructed by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to draft a false SD on behalf of Balasubramaniam.

He had made the claim after Balasubramaniam passed away from a heart attack a day before.

If it's corruption, not our jurisdiction

On NGO Global Witness' video alleging corruption and tax evasion by Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud's family, Ismail said the police would examine all police reports made on the matter.

This, he said, was to determine whether the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) or police had jurisdiction over the matter.

"We accept all police reports but we will review them because if it is an issue of corruption, then we will hand it over to the MACC to investigate.

"We don't want to have our jurisdictions confused," he said.
