Go back to Kelantan, Mahathir tells Husam

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says PAS Putrajaya candidate Husam Musa should first fix problems in Kelantan, where he is a caretaker exco member, before making his bid to be the federal administrative capital's elected representative.

"Until then, sit quietly Kelantan. That is your place. Go fix your place and imitate Putrajaya's precincts. Build good offices and homes for the locals who work in the civil service.

NONE"After you (Husam, left) prove your worth, then ask for the chance to work in Putrajaya, though not as prime minister. Bit by bit, you may earn your promotion," Mahathir said in Putrajaya last night at a campaign ceramah for BN's incumbent Putrajaya MP Tengku Adnan Mansor.

Tengku Adnan won Putrajaya with a 2,734-vote majority in the 2008 general election.

At the time, Putrajaya had the distinction of being the smallest parliamentary constituency of all, with only 6,608 voters. In comparison, the largest parliamentary constituency at the time wasKapar, with 144,369 voters.

Mahathir said Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur were the envy of the world, particularly for Islamic nations, whereas Kelantan was a backwater state that made a mockery of its moniker 'Serambi Makkah' (Doorstep of Mecca).

"We are ashamed. You cannot even drink the water there or rinse your mouth. Is this the Doorstep of Mecca? Let us not tarnish the name of Mecca by saying that Kelantan is the Doorstep of Mecca," he said.

Mahathir urged the audience of about 1,000 people head to the polls early on May 5 and ensure that Husam receives a crushing defeat.

Mahathir also joked that Husam could learn to be prime minister by selling banana fritters and he could also open a stall in Putrajaya, if he wished to do so.

"That is the best training to be a prime minister. Tell him that there is a prime minister who learnt the ropes by selling banana fritters," he said, referring to himself.

"So if he wants to become the prime minister, we give him with a wok, palm oil and fuel, and tell him to fry bananas. After 10 or 15 years, if he gets good at it, then he can run for premiership," he said, before telling Husam to stay put in Kelantan until then.
139 percent jump in Putrajaya voters
The number of voters in Putrajaya has since swelled by 139 percent to 15,798, made up predominately of civil servants, who are considered the BN vote bank.

Hence, Putrajaya is widely considered BN stronghold, in view of the strong presence of the civil service and BN's strong showing in the last election.

NONEDespite this, more 6,000 people braved the light rain to show up at a PAS ceramah in the city on Friday night, at which Husam and PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat were among the speakers.

Ahead of Mahathir's appearance in Putrajaya and after Nik Aziz's ceramah, PAS organ Harakah Daily had played up the campaign drive of Mahathir in Putrajaya

It quoted anonymous Umno sources as saying that Mahathir's campaigning in the BN stronghold, with BN chairperson Najib Abdul Razak to follow suit, were signs that the BN stronghold was being threatened, which was why mahthir and Najib were scrambling to the rescue.
