OF HATE-MAIL & 'SURAT LAYANG': Whose culture - PR, retired general or Umno-BN?

OF HATE-MAIL & 'SURAT LAYANG': Whose culture - PR, retired general or Umno-BN?
Slanderous leaflets aimed to incite public tension and false 'open letters' twisted to poke disunity within the Opposition are now following hot on the heels of escalating political violence as Prime Minister Najib Razak and his Umno party ratchet up their campaign to cling to power.
Two PKR leaders are among the many Opposition politicians hit by the latest slander and physical violence.
Tan Kee Kwong and Tan Poh Lai, the children of Malaysia's late Mr Opposition - Tan Sri Dr Tan Chee Khoon - have become the object of a smear campaign aimed to tarnish their Pakatan Rakyat coalition as well as their father's name so as to chop down their rising political influence.
Kee Kwong, the PKR candidate for Wangsa Maju, has already lodged a police report on the "false and slanderous" leaflets that have been widely distributed in his constituency and other parts of Kuala Lumpur. One Wangsa constituent even complained that his son in Standard 5 had obtained a copy of the leaflet while in school. (scroll below)
"I was shocked by these leaflets. The evil people behind the operation are intent on 'fitnah' (slander) and it just illustrates what is going on in this country that we in Malaysia have lost our souls and it looks like only a new PR government can restore our souls," Kee Kwong told Malaysia Chronicle.
"These leaflets show the masterminds cannot differentiate between right and wrong, no difference between lies and truth. Do you think the president of PAS will ever say Islam will have no place in Malaysia? To those evil doers, please use your brains a bit. It is obvious you are targeting the Malay heartland because Malays in Taman Tun would certainly not believe this."
The leaflets that Kee Kwong referred to had invited voters to choose the PR so that when the coalition came to power, (1) Islam would no longer be the official religion (2) the Sultanate and Monarchy system would be abolished (3) non-Muslims would be allowed to use the word Allah (4) the special rights of the Malays would be removed (5) agencies such as Mara, Felda, Felcra and Risda would be dismantled, and (6) Malay soldiers and the police would be disassembled.
The leaflets also carried the pictures of DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, PKR adviser Anwar Ibrahim and PAS president Hadi Awang at the bottom.
Hate mail & 'surat layang' : Would ex-general unleash such Umno-type tactics?
Over in Johor, Kee Kwong's  sister Poh Lai is the object of a hate-mail purportedly distributed by PKR colleague General (Rtd) Md Hashim Hussein.
Poh Lai sees the 'open letter' as a bid to get the Chinese community in Johor Bahru to not support Hashim, who is due to contest the JB seat against Umno's Shahrir Samad.
In the letter which has been widely circulated in JB, Hashim allegedly wrote that 'by the grace of God' he was chosen by Anwar to contest JB instead of Poh Lai because he was a Muslim.
Poh Lai, the 'hate-mail'  went on to say, had "inherited the political ideals of her father Tan Chee Khoon who had led the Labour Party and Socialist Front, which are rooted in Communism. Tan Chee Khoon opposed the formation of Malaysia and Islam as the official religion. Tan Poh Lai has inherited her father's struggle and is now trying to revive that struggle in Malaysia."
The letter also claimed that "Poh Lai did not get on well with the Malays".
"The letter is a complete lie and I do not believe it came from the General but from our common enemy and we all know who that is," Poh Lai told Malaysia Chronicle.
Cynical politics by Cowards
To political observers, the latest leaflets and the open letters represent the growing psy-war as the May 5 General Election neared. In particular, Umno-BN has been blamed for using reverse psychology to get at PR parties by sowing internal distrust.
A spate of escalating physical violence with crude petrol bombs thrown into rubbish dumps nearby to BN operations centers are another 'time bomb' waiting to explode. Warning that such incidents could spin out of control, PR leaders have slammed Umno-BN for what they claim were sly and cynical maneuvers aimed to create public hatred against the PR.
Kee Kwong also lambasted those who tried to tarnish his father's reputation. Chee Khoon, who died at age 77, was respected for his "without fear or favor" style of communication.
"They are cowards who dare not show their real faces," said Kee Kwong.
"Pakatan Rakyat is trying to change through the ballot box. We have given this promise many times, we want peaceful democracy. Something similar happened in the 1960s and this is why my father, the late Tan Sri Dr Tan Chee Khoon, left the Labour Party and the Socialist Front coalition to start Gerakan because he believed that the only good and sure way was through the democratic process. At that time some of his colleagues in the Socialist Front wanted to change through armed struggle."
"Yes, in a few days' time we want to win, that's why we are in politics but we want to win through the ballot box. It looks like Umno-BN wants to win at all costs even to the extent of causing social economic and religious destruction to this beautiful country and their latest 'special message' (leaflet) make us even more determined to overthrow them because they do not love this country at all."
