33 protesters seek help with bail money

Two groups involved in the Dataran Merbok rally have urged the public to help raise bail money for 33 protesters who will be charged tomorrow for their participation in a demonstration.

They were among some 200 people who marched from Dataran Merbok to Parliament after the Black 505 rally on June 22 to protest against electoral fraud.

NONEAccording to a joint statement by Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) and Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM), the 33 individuals are expected to be charged under Section 147 and Section 353 of the Penal Code, which involves rioting and using criminal force on a public servant in the line of duty, respectively.

"Imagine if a bail of RM3,000 for an offence is set, then RM150,000 worth of bail money would be required. If not, then there will be some who will experience celebrating Aidilfitri in Sungai Buloh," said SAMM's coordinator Badrul Hisham Shahrin, better known as Chegubard.

Chegubard promised that the bail money would be accounted for and returned upon completion of the trial. Information on how to donate is available on SAMM's website.

During the protest, some participants got into altercations with the police at the gates of Parliament. The police complained of protesters pelting them with eggs and water bottles. There were at least 32 arrests.

The 33 individuals are the latest to be charged with crimes in connection to the rally at Dataran Merbok.

Three individuals, including opposition lawmakers Rafizi Ramli and Anthony Loke, were charged on July 19 with organising the rally in contravention with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA).

They face a maximum fine of RM10,000. The MPs might be disqualified from their positions if they are fined more than RM2,000 by the court.

Four others, including student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim, were charged under the same law with gathering at a restricted area - the Abdul Rahman Mosque at Universiti Malaya - on the day of the rally.
