Three Sukma athletes arrested for RAPE

Three Sukma athletes arrested for RAPE
Three athletes of the Malaysian sports tournament Sukma landed in hot soup following a police report lodged by a fellow sportswoman who alleged that she was gang-raped by them at a hostel on Saturday.
Police said the victim claimed in her report that the sexual assault occurred in a room at the Sukma games village located at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
The three athletes and the 19-year-old victim, who are members of the Sukma handball team, had apparently organised a party held within the hostel prior to the attack.
Sources revealed that the victim was the only girl among some 20 athletes who attended the gathering where alcoholic drinks were allegedly consumed.
It is learnt that hours into the party, the victim became drowsy and was helped to her room by the three detained athletes before the alleged sexual assault took place.
Serdang deputy police chief DSP Lam Chin Fei said the three teenage youths aged 18 and 19 were picked up at their hostel to assist in the probe into the report lodged by the victim on Saturday. He said the male youths have been remanded until Wednesday.
He said the victim and the detained youths have been sent for a medical examination as part of the investigation. It is learnt that police are investigating if the victim and her attackers were intoxicated at the time of the attack.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had said that the police were viewing the case seriously as it involved the country's sports image and crime among athletes.
"This is a very serious report. We will carry out a thorough investigation."
The latest case is the second incident to scar the image of the Sukma Games since 2010 when bowler Nor Afizal Azizan was arrested for raping an underaged girl at a hotel.
The 19-year-old bowler was sentenced to five years’ jail by the Malacca High Court for statutory rape after he pleaded guilty to raping the 13-year-old girl.
However, upon appeal two months later, he was freed on a five-year good behaviour bond after the court ruled that no coercion or violence was used when the athlete carried out the act.
Sukma is an annual Malaysian sports event to encourage competitive sports involving a variety of popular games.
