Hindu temple broken into, figurines shattered

Thieves had broken into the well-known Sri Maha Mariamman temple at Queen Street, leaving figurines in pieces this morning.

A temple official lodged a report at the central police headquarters at 7am, claiming that the temple had been broken into and gold items kept under the shrines were also suspected to be missing.

The complainant, whose details have yet to be released by the police, said that the break-in occurred at the grills at the back of the temple.

"Several figurines (of deities) and tables were broken. Gold kept under the shrines are suspected to be missing," the report said. No details on the missing gold have been disclosed as yet .

George Town OCPD ACP Gan Kon Meng, who issued the report, said that the case is being probed under Section 457 of the Penal Code for trespass and break-in.

The report was lodged by a pensioner S Varatha Rajoo, 57, at about 8.15am along with temple chairperson Vasantharajan Nagaran.

According to the police, five shrines with ten figurines were damaged and 36 precious stones under the three figurines were gone.

Also missing were old gold pieces under three shrines.

Police estimated the amount of losses to be about RM45,000.

They added that while theft is suspected as the motive, there is no CCTV recording to facilitate investigations.
