National anthem and patriotic movie clips in cinemas

In conjunction with Merdeka Day on Aug 31, the national anthem Negaraku and two patriotic movie clips will be played in the cinemas nationwide each time before a movie screening from Aug 28 until Sept 3, Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said.

ahmad shabery cheek 041108 02He said the two patriotic movie clips are the 90-second long 'Last Message' (Pesanan Terakhir) which commemorates the fallen heros of the Lahad Datu intrusions and 150-second long 'My Birth Place' (Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku), which portrays patriotism.

Ahmad Shabery made this announcement at a press conference in Putrajaya today, after meeting with cinema operators, including Golden Screen Cinema (GSC), TGV Cinemas, MBO Cinemas, Lotus Five Star and Cathay Cineplex Cinemas.

He said besides cinemas, television stations will screen the movie clips as well.
Stand up when national anthem is played
"The movie-goers shall stand up when national anthem is played to show respect. And cinema operators will in charge of monitoring this.

"I hope I don't have to arrange police personnel to station in the cinema," Ahmad Shabery quipped.

In fact, he said, such practice was common as the national anthem was played in many official functions and was accepted by most of the people.

Ahmad Shabery said the authorities would draft guidelines, including slots, lighting adjustment, and actions to be taken against those who refused to follow the rules.

He said the Lahad Datu intrusion was a major incident since the independence and the security force suffered great sacrifices.

He therefore urged the audience in the cinemas to stand up when watching the Lahad Datu film clip to show their respect for the nation's armed forces.
According to the Section 8 (1) of the National Anthem Act 1968, whenever the national anthem is played or sung or whenever the abridged or short version is played all persons present shall stand to attention as a mark of respect except where the national anthem is played or sung in the course of a broadcast or newsreels as part of such broadcast or news-reels.

Under the Section 8 (2) of the same Act, any person who knowingly shows disrespect towards the national anthem in any public place shall be liable to a fine not exceeding RM100 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one month.

However, under the Section 9 of the same Act, any police officer may arrest without warrant any person offending in his sight against Section 8 unless such person gives his name and address and satisfies such officer that he will duly answer any summons or other proceedings that will be taken against him.
