Umno sec-gen rebuffs Anwar's call for dialogue

Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor today said there was no national issues that needed to be discussed between Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and the government.

"Everything is merely about politics and if he (Anwar) wants a discussion then he should bring it to the Parliament.

"Everything has always been about politics to him. Why now, when they have disputed the results, and even the Election Commission?" he told reporters after launching the 10th anniversary of the Putrajaya Lake Cruise today.

Tengku Adnan said the opposition leaders were never sincere in their action nor honest with their words.

He was commenting on a suggestion by Anwar to have an open dialogue with the government to discuss "national issues" in the spirit of Merdeka.

On the cruise, Tengku Adnan, who is Federal Territories Minister, said it needed to be further promoted as the best tourism product in Putrajaya and believed it could be realised with the service having been taken over by a subsidiary of Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) since last July 1.

Various programmes, including rebranding, are on the line to make the service more attractive, he added.

The packages offered by the Putrajaya Lake Cruise are the Cruise and Learn Education Package, Memorable Alumni/Reunion Cruise Package, Sparkling Fireworks Cruise, Love Boat Perahu Dondang Sayang, Cruise Water Activity and Recreation Package.
Bring it to Parliament
Meanwhile, in Kuala Lumpur, Tourism and Culture Minister Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz suggested that nwar raise the matter of open dialogue at the next Dewan Rakyat sitting.
"Whatever needs to be discussed, bring it up in Parliament because we want o be transparent out this... so that the people know," he told reporters when sked to comment about the matter.
Earlier he had launched Muzium Negara's golden jubilee celebration and ommemorative coin and stamp in conjunction with the auspicious occasion.

Esscom to do census at Sandakan water villages

The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) will be conducting its second census at water villages in Sandakan early next month.

Its director-general Mohammad Mentek said they had identified two such villages for the census operation but declined to reveal more details.

"Esscom will be holding a meeting with the Sandakan Municipal Council and other agencies related to the census on Sept 4 to fine tune the details.

"I hope the residents in the census operation will give their full cooperation, they have nothing to be afraid," he told reporters after hosting an Aidifitri open houses at his residence in Taman Ujana Kingfisher, Likas, near Kota Kinabalu today.

Also present was former Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Sakaran Dandai.

On the first census carried out in nine water villages in Mukim Simunul, Semporna last month, he said it found there were 2,356 houses and of the number, 1,371 belonged to locals, 815 were occupied by non-citizens holding various documents including the IMM13 document while 170 others were empty.

He said Esscom would be leaving it to the authorities on further action to be taken following the census findings.

Family watches in horror as man gunned down in temple

A man was shot dead at point-blank range while praying with his wife and children at a temple near Gelang Patah, Johor, last night.

K Jaganathan, 37, who had eight criminal records, was gunned down before his horrified family and onlookers about 7.30pm.

Initial police investigations revealed that earlier, the gunman had arrived on a motorcycle ridden by an accomplice outside the temple in Taman Nusantara.

He walked into the temple and upon confronting Jaganathan, fired several shots in the direction of the victim and escaped on the motorcycle.

Johor police chief Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the victim, from Taman Universiti near Skudai, was sent to a nearby clinic but died upon arrival.

He said the body was sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru.

"More than two hours after the shooting incident, the police detained a suspect in his 30s, in Gelang Patah to facilitate investigations.

"A task force headed by acting state CID chief, ACP Azizan Anan, has been set up to investigate the killing. We are also in the midst of intensifying 'Ops Cantas' to track down those involved," he told reporters here today.

It is understood that Jaganathan was previously detained under the Emergency ordinance at the Simpang Renggam prison.

He was also believed to have been linked with a secret society.

Shahidan: Redelineation needs support of all parties

The redelineation of electoral boundaries by the Election Commission (EC) should be supported by all political parties in the interest of the people, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim.

He said this was because the redelineation exercise as enshrined under the constitution constituted the right of the people to have more elected representatives to strike a balance in the number of voters in certain constituencies.

NONE"So, if the imbalance needed changes to the electoral boundaries, it is unbecoming on the part of the government to deny the people's right," he said when playing host at an Aidilfitri open house at the Putra World Trade Centre today.

He was commenting on Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's statement that Pakatan Rakyat would not endorse any redelineation of electoral boundaries by the EC with its current leadership still calling the shots.

Shahidan said it was the opposition's right not to endorse any changes to the electoral boundaries but it should not be associated with the EC leadership.

EC deputy chief Wan Ahmad Wan Omar recently said that the redelineation of electoral boundaries, which was supposed to be carried out in 2011, would begin at the end of the year and expected to complete within two years.

On Anwar's call to a dialogue with the government on national issues in the spirit of the independence, Shahidan said the opposition leader could bring up the issues in Parliament.

Ministry withdraws endorsement of M50 show

Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz said he had withdrawn the endorsement given by the National Visual Art Gallery (BSVN) for the M50 Malaysia Day exhibition because the artwork ‘I is for Idiot’, which is being probed by the police, is deemed "offensive".

NONE"Every exhibition must go through a committee in the BSVN, which is under my ministry," he said.

"On the issue of the (‘I is for Idiot’) artwork, it was not shown to the committee, so when it was displayed at the exhibition, that means the person responsible is not being honest," he added.

"And when the artwork was exhibited, we found it offensive. So we have ordered it (installation) to be withdrawn," he told reporters after attending the 50th anniversary of the National Museum today.
US invasion of Iraq
Police are investigating the artwork under Section 298 of the Penal Code which deals with religious insults, following a police report on Aug 28 by Islamic NGO, Muafakat.

NONEMuafakat said the art work is offensive as it allegedly depicts Islam and Muslims as idiots, and had reversed the Quranic verse.
The work was part of the M50 Selamat Hari Malaysia exhibition at Publika Mall.

The exhibition runs from Aug 27 to Sept 17, and is co-organised by MapKL@Publika, Balai Seni Visual Negara and the Tourism and Culture Ministry.
Artist Anurendra Jegadeva hasexplained that 'I for Idiot' refers to the US invasion of Iraq under then president George W Bush.

Water supply to be fully restored in 3 to 5 days

Four water treatment plants which were closed yesterday due to a diesel spill in Sungai Selangor were restarted early today.

Energy, Green Technology and Water Deputy Minister Mahdzir Khalid said today, water supply at 80 percent of the affected areas, especially low-lying, was expected to gradually recover within three to five days.

Pumping raw water from Sungai Selangor began at the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant at 12.30 this morning, followed by Selangor Phase 3 (SSP3) at 12.40am, Sungai Selangor Phase 1 (SSP1) at 5am, and the Sungai Selangor Phase 2 (SSP2) at 5.30am, respectively.

He was speaking to reporters during a survey at Sungai Selangor Phase 2 in Bestari Jaya.

umno supreme council special meeting 260809 mahdzir khalidMahdzir said about 60 percent of the water supply in the Klang Valley depended on the source of raw water from Sungai Selangor, which was processed by the four water treatment plants.

There is not sufficient water from other water treatment plants to back up the four plants.

Therefore, he said the construction of the Langat 2 water treatment plant that would bring in raw water from Pahang, was vital to ensure stable water supply to consumers in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor.

Mahdzir said the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) had appointed a contractor to conduct clean-up works. Luas has sought help from Indah Water Konsortium which sent six tankers to clean up the oil spill near the garbage truck depot and completed the clean-up works at 2.30am today.

Meanwhile, the source of the oil spill was identified as having originated from a garbage truck depot in Jalan Batu Arang, Sungai Bakau yesterday.

Stop-work order

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the Selayang Municipal Council had sealed the premises and issued a stop-work order.

He was speaking at an Aidilfitri open house in Bukit Badong today.

Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) said up to now, the total number of affected consumer accounts had dropped to around 880,000 accounts and was 60 percent of the total consumer accounts in six districts, namely Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, Klang/Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Selangor and Hulu Selangor.

Syabas corporate affairs executive director Abdul Halem Mat Som said water supply to the Kuala Langat area was now fully restored since early this morning.

Syabas corporate communications and public affairs department assistant general manager Priscilla Alfred said in a statement that Syabas had despatched 46 lorry tankers and 20 static tanks to affected areas, adding that 505 other static tanks were on stand-by.

She said Johor, Perak and Negri Sembilan had provided 14 lorry tankers to help Syabas.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Department of Environment (DOE) has conducted an immediate investigation into the four water treatment plants to identify the source of the contamination.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister G Palanivel said the probe revealed the oil spill was due to a factory dumping lubricating oil (SW 305) into a drain.

"The dumped oil was discharged into Sungai Gong and a significant amount flowed into Sungai Selangor, forcing the closure of the four water treatment plants yesterday.

"The factory owner has been instructed to take immediate action to block the drains to prevent the oil from mixing with the water and flowing into Sungai Gong," he said in a statement here today.

Businesses affected

Meanwhile, in Shah Alam, a restaurant cashier told Bernama this morning that there was no water supply from yesterday. Currently, the restaurant depends on its water tank supply.

Abdul Mutalib Syed Muhamad said the lack of water was affecting the restaurant's operations as customers were merely trickling in, unlike before when there was sufficient water.

Another business affected was that of a laundry shop operator in Section 11. Chai, as he wanted to be known only as, said he had no water supply since this morning.

He said some of his clients had stopped sending laundry to his shop when they learnt there was no water supply at his premises.

"The tank water is not enough to wash large quantities of clothes. We are just dry-cleaning and hand-washing today, as this does not require a lot of water," he said.

Subang Jaya ‘unsafe for women: Poll

An online poll on the website of the Subang Jaya Municipal Council suggests that a majority feel the area is unsafe for women.

But is Subang Jaya the only municipality that is unsafe for women? Or is it the only council that dares to survey the public to find out what they think of their security in the area.

Tatoo Gang vs Tatoo PDRM

When it is no longer cricket

In fact, more than 70% of the Umno members at that time were teachers, writers, newspaper editors, poets, intellectuals, etc. They were well-read people who only wanted what was best for the country. They were not tainted by thoughts of the New Economic Policy or Deng Xiaoping’s ideology such as ‘to get rich is glorious’. And their leaders were those from the elite community.
THE CORRIDORS OF POWER
Raja Petra Kamarudin
There are many positive and negative stories in the media today regarding this most important day in Malaysia’s history, Merdeka Day. Of the many, I have decided to pick up the report by Martin Vengadesan, Rahmah Ghazali, Rashvinjeet S. Bedi and T. Avineshwaran, which was published in The Star.
This report quotes a few people whom I personally know.
Reading through this report it sounds more like a story about Tunku Abdul Rahman than a story about Merdeka. I suppose in a way it is and that is why I have titled my piece “When it is no longer cricket” (meaning when it is no longer done or when it is no longer acceptable).
Even though those interviewed in the report below (both from the ruling party as well as from the opposition) sing the Tunku’s praises, you may have noticed that no one from PAS has been quoted. This is because if you were to ask a PAS leader regarding his or her opinion of the Tunku, you will not get positive feedback. The PAS people will condemn the Tunku for being a bad Muslim who drinks and gambles.
Hence people’s opinion of the Tunku would depend on your religious position. Liberal Malays and non-Malays (such as those quoted in the report below) would say nice things about the Tunku while conservative Malays or fundamentalist Muslims would have the opposite view.
I want to also say something about the Tunku, which none of those interviewed touched on. And this something is regarding why the Tunku is a great man, if you go by what those quoted in the report have to say about him.
I think I am slightly qualified (I said ‘slightly’) to comment because the Tunku was a personal friend of our family. My late parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., all knew him. And the Tunku was in England when my father was there and when my father married my mother and soon after that I was born.
Why is the Tunku such a great man (and many, other than maybe the PAS people, will agree that he is a great man)? Why is he non-racial, liberal, fair, just, and so on, as what they all say?
The answer to this question is: because of his upbringing.
You see, many of the early Umno leaders were men and women of breeding. Quite a number were from the royal family or what the Malays would call ‘orang istana’ (palace people). They were not only brought up in the palace environment but also received a good education, many of them in the UK. Hence they were a very different breed of people.
If you had personally known the Umno leaders of the 1950s and 1960s, you can see the glaring difference between those people and the Umno people of today. For example, my own father and grandfather, both who never became Umno members although they were close to the leaders of that time, would be good examples of what the Malays of the 1950s and 1960s were like.
Hence when you reflect on what Malaysia used to be 56 years ago and then you compare that era to the Malaysia of today, you must not overlook one very crucial point. And that point is the Malays of that time were educated in the British tradition and were what we would probably call ‘Brown Englishmen’.
Another very important point is that the Malays of that era were also very feudalistic. As much as we may think that feudalism is so yesterday and today we should be talking about liberalism and republicanism, we must not overlook the fact that the old feudal Malays had certain values and standards that the Malays of today no longer possess.
Then came leaders like Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim who did not share these English ideals that the leaders a generation before them possessed. The ‘Umno Baru’ leaders who came later were all products of a local education. They had no love for Britain or the British tradition. In fact, they hated feudalism plus what they perceived as ‘western values’.
And that was when Malaysia began to erode into racism and religious intolerance.
We may be proud of the fact that, today, Malaysian politics is no longer dominated by the orang istana or the Brown Englishmen. We may be proud of the fact that Malaysian politics is now in the hands of the masses and no longer in the hands of the elite. However, while we may be proud of that one fact, we also have to live with the fact that Malaysian politics is also in the hands of the uncultured who have no sense of British fairness and will not care one bit, as what the British will say, even if this is not cricket.

As Tunku saw it: Maintaining the Merdeka spirit for a multi-racial Malaysia
By Martin Vengadesan and Rahmah Ghazali with additional reporting by Rashvinjeet S. Bedi and T. Avineshwaran, The Star
The iconic image of our first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman shouting "Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!" is more than a photograph or a soundbite.
It is living history. The birth of a nation that is still growing. A nation that is both a minor miracle and a lost opportunity. A nation that survived bloody guerrilla wars (the Emergency), hostile neighbours (the Confrontation) and terrifying racial riots (May 13) in its infancy to become a thriving yet dysfunctional entity.
As we celebrate 56 years of the collective blood, sweat and tears of our ancestors and our peers, it seems that a simple love of this land and of each other is what is needed. And surely no one person exemplified that more than our first Prime Minister.
"No matter what we are, we are all Malaysians," our founding father once said. And it was his steely determination and commitment to an inclusive Malaysia that has helped steer our course ever since that momentous moment on August 31, 1957.
"Tunku never backed down in the face of extremism and communalism, something sorely missing today," said Universiti Malaysia's Assoc Prof Azmi Sharom to The Star Online.
"Much has been said about Tunku's jovial and open nature which endeared him to Malaysians of all ethnicity.”
"But to me, his strong and principled stand as to what Malaysia represented made all the difference.”
Tunku was adamant that this country was a secular democracy and his key reason for this was because we are a multi-ethnic, multi-religious country," he said.
Sharyn Shufiyan, the great grandchild of Tunku Abdul Rahman, passionately believes that Malaysians should embrace the fact that they are Malaysians regardless of ethnicity and religion.
"Even among the Malays, a new ideological trend is emerging. There are some who recognize the redundancy of Malay rights and privileges because elevating the poor should be across all ethnicities regardless," she said.
She said ethnic prejudices exist also among non-Malays.
"Malays are sometimes looked down upon by the Chinese. Unless we start mixing with each other and getting to know one another, we will not be truly united as Malaysians," she explained.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is another who draws inspiration from Tunku's vision.
"Apart from the obvious accolade of being the father of Independence, Tunku laid down the foundations for a nation guided by justice, liberty and harmony, so that we could live beyond tolerance and celebrate each other's diversity," he said.
Prof Datuk Dr Shamsul Amri Baharuddin from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia said the spirit of multi-ethnic Malaysia has been deeply embedded into the Malaysian psyche from the very beginning.
"One of the most significant platforms he established, almost immediately after Merdeka, as a vehicle for fostering harmony in multicultural Malaysia was the National Art Gallery in 1958.”
"He really believed arts and social integration are inseparable," he said.
Pulai MP Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed first heard about Tunku from his father the late Tan Sri Mohamed Rahmat who served as Tunku's political secretary in 1965.
“Tunku was a very honest man and did things for the country. He never thought about enriching himself,” said Nur Jazlan.
He also doesn’t think that any leader could unite Malaysia in the way Tunku did, especially when it came to bringing people together just before the Malaya's independence.
“He never played the race or religious card to unite the rakyat,” he said adding that Tunku’s biggest contribution was the formation of Malaysia.
DAP national chairman Karpal Singh said Tunku was a leader who treated everyone fairly, regardless of their racial, religious or economic background.
"For me, it is still Tunku Abdul Rahman who was above all. He was one man who was determined to be a leader for all Malaysians, regardless of race," he said.
Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman said despite being a leader of a Malay majority party Umno, the Tunku endorsed multiracial Malaysia and agreed to a coalition government as a means of fostering unity.
"He was the leader of Umno and an example to all Umno politicians. He was not an extremist. If we Umno leaders are racist, we will lose out," she said.
Jempol MP Tan Sri Isa Samad echoes that view.
"It was Tunku who mooted the idea for power sharing which led to a coalition government in our country," he said.
Parti Sosialis Malaysia chairman Dr Nasir Hashim said Tunku was able to foster a united multi-racial Malaya even though the British colonial rulers had earlier controlled the country through a "divide and rule" policy.
"To sustain this vision we must empower the people and revamp the present exploitative economic system to be people oriented," he said.
"To progress we must balance out the uneven development of the country through efficient use of resources, create opportunities, denounce racial policies that create disharmony, and implement poverty eradication schemes, irrespective of race, religion, creed and region," he said.
Malaysia as a nation has taken many steps forward since Tunku took that bold first move but we must be mindful that rapid progress sometimes means that important values get left behind. Our freedom and independence is a flame that must be allowed to shine brightly, not leave us sifting through charred ruins.

The cause of Klang Valley’s water woes, an illegal factory in Rawang

The Selangor government has shut down a factory believed to be the source of a diesel spill which contaminated a river and caused the shutdown of four treatment plants that supplied water to more than a million consumers in the Klang Valley.
A joint team comprising personnel from the Selayang Municipal Council, Selangor Department of Environment and the police raided the factory which was found to be operating without a permit.
"The factory had been issued 14 compounds totalling RM34,000 for a variety of offences," The Star Online quoted Selayang council president Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain as saying.
The factory is about 500 metres from the AEON hypermarket, close to an upmarket residential area in Rawang.
The council closed the factory in Jalan Batu Arang several months ago after residents complained of a stench emanating from it.
However, the owner continued operations.
The Star Online said the factory was carrying out heavy industrial activities, including collecting waste oil and reprocessing it.
"They were caught while discharging the waste oil from two lorry tankers owned by the factory," Mohd Azizi said.
This time, the council sealed the factory. Officers will also be posted there to ensure that it doesn't resume operations.
The factory was also found to be manufacturing roll-on/roll-off containers and compactors, The Star reported.
In a statement last night, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) said over one million consumers in seven districts in Selangor might have to go without water for days due to the closure of the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2 and 3 and Rantau Panjang treatment plants to facilitate clean-up work.
The districts affected were Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, Klang/Shah Alam, Gombak, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor.
However, today Selangor state exco member Elizabeth Wong lashed out at the water concessionaire for "creating panic among the public" over the diesel spillage at Sungai Selangor which resulted in massive water supply disruptions in the Klang Valley.
"Syabas need not have issued a statement to create furore and trigger panic. Furthermore, the source of the spillage is not as being claimed by the company," Wong told The Malaysian Insider today.
She said the four plants shut down following the diesel spill started operating again at 4am today and were at full capacity by 6am.
"The reservoirs are beginning to fill up," she assured millions of consumers today in the wake of Syabas activating its emergency response plan to deal with the major disruption of supply.
She promised action against the errant factory.

Stop finding fault and work with Syabas, Putrajaya tells Selangor

Putrajaya has said water concessionaire Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) did the right thing warning consumers about the uncertainty of the water supply disruption in the Klang Valley which the state government had said "created panic among the public".
Energy, Green Technology and Water deputy minister Datuk Mahdzir Khalid said Selangor state exco member Elizabeth Wong should stop finding fault with Syabas and called on her to work with it for consumers' sake.
"I am satisfied with the action taken by the water concessionaire in alerting the consumers about the oil spillage and water disruption.
"Everyone is working to get supply back. So this is not the time to find fault. I do not want to talk about politics. Let's work together," he said after a visit to one of the plants today.
The Selangor government has locked horns with the BN government and Syabas, the main supplier of treated water in the rich state as well as the two neighbouring federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, for the past four years over the Klang Valley's water crisis.
Treated water supply in the country's most developed state was a major campaign in the May 5 general election after Syabas raised the alarm in 2011 of a possible crisis in the near future due to near-zero reserves at the state's water treatment plants.
The federal government has insisted that the state's water crisis can be best prevented through the building of the Langat 2 treatment plant, while the Selangor government has protested the multi-billion ringgit plant, saying that it is too costly and will not enable it to continue providing cheap water for Selangor residents.
Currently it gives domestic consumers free water for up to 20 cubic metres each month.
The undercurrents over this festering issue played out today when Wong lashed out at the water concessionaire for "creating panic among the public" over the diesel spillage at Sungai Selangor which resulted in massive water supply disruptions in the Klang Valley.
"Syabas need not have issued a statement to create furore and trigger panic. Furthermore, the source of the spillage is not as being claimed by the company," Wong told The Malaysian Insider today.
Syabas had classified the situation a Code Red and had last night appealed to consumers to use water prudently as the duration of disruption could not be ascertained.
Klang Valley folk were in a frenzy this morning snatching up bottled water at convenience and neighbourhood stores as taps ran dry.
Mahdzir said the situation had returned to normal but as a precautionary measure, the treated water samples would be tested every two hours for any contamination.
He said that the water disruption which affected one million consumers in seven districts in Selangor due to the closure of the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2 and 3 and Rantau Panjang treatment plants, can be avoided if the state has another water treatment plant
"This plant serves consumers in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. This is why we need the Langat 2 project so water users will not be affected," he declared.
The Selangor government, which is in favour of restructuring the state's water services industry, wants to take over Syabas
Earlier it had offered to buy Syabas, Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd (PNSB), Syarikat Pengeluaran Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) and Konsortium ABASS at RM5.7 billion. The offer was rejected.
Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim was reported to have increased the offer to more than RM9 billion after the polls to take over all assets and liabilities of the companies, including their bonds.

Sebab Cina, Portugis tawan Melaka, British masuk campur Perak

Calon PMR dirogol kenalan Facebook

Harun IdrisHarun Idris

It’s a matter of time.

Apa kata jika langkah pertama Anwar ini adalah suatu rancangan to cut off Mahathir?

Loya tekak kita.
