Kuala Lumpur is going ahead with banning soup kitchens for the homeless in the capital city's centre but will only enforce the ruling after the Hari Raya festivities, the Federal Territories Ministry said today.
The ban, which was supposed to take effect yesterday, had caused an outrage among charities operating the soup kitchens for years in the capital city and Malaysians who felt the government was going against the spirit of the Ramadan fasting month.
Ministry secretary-general Datuk Adnan Md Ikshan said the ministry was not trying to flex its muscle in enforcing the law but to make sure the city is clean and that the public facilities and places are accessible to everyone.
"We do not want to enforce it for the sake of enforcing the law. So we would like the non-governmental organisations to do this with us to keep the cleanliness in the city. If the homeless keep on occupying the public places all the time, how about the others who want to enjoy the same public area?" Adnan asked after a dialogue with the charities.
