'UiTM will pay twice more for campus maintenance'

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) will be forced to pay twice the amount in maintenance charges to the concessionaires building six UiTM campuses around the country.

PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli pointed this out at a press conference held at the National Oversight and Whistleblowers (NOW) centre in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur, today.

"Maintainance charges imposed by the concessionaires will be at RM1.05 per square feet as opposed to the RM0.50psf to RM0.60psf that UiTM has been paying," Rafizi said.

However, the Pandan MP admitted, the information given by the UiTM management could not be confirmed without looking at the concession agreements.

"The matter was discussed among UiTM lecturers and the information was passed to me," he said.

As proof that the concession agreements would not put UiTM in the losing end, Rafizi said, the cabinet should heed the advice given by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Paul Low.

Low (right) said last week that the concession agreementsmust be made public as soon as possible.

"The cabinet's refusal to disclose the agreements will only confirm the allegations," said Rafizi, who argued last month that the concession agreement would only benefit politically-linked individuals.

He claimed the private financing initiatives (PFI) meant that the government would have to fork out RM8.6 billion for the six UiTM campus projects, and not just RM1.8 billion as should be the estimated cost.

However, Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said Rafizi did not understand the PFI method and that the government would clarify further on this.
