The family of teenager Tinasha Ganesan Rao, who died five days after being declared brain dead, today demanded to know why different sets of reports were prepared by Assunta Hospital to them and to an insurance company.
According to Tinasha's family, the insurance company was furnished a more detailed document containing specialists' reports.
But they said they were only given a chronology of events from the time the 14-year-old was admitted until she was declared brain dead five days later.
The family said they had obtained the confidential report submitted by the hospital's administration to the insurance company.
Ramesh questioned why the hospital could not meet the family and reveal the findings of the specialists.
"The report they gave us was merely a chronology of the time Tinasha was at the hospital. But they could give the insurance company the full details."
"Why can't the hospital just be forthright with us? Is it simply because the hospital is claiming money from the insurance company, that is why they are providing the full details?" he asked at a press conference at his house in Petaling Jaya, where Tinasha's parents were also present.
The report submitted by Assunta Hospital to insurer AIA said four specialists - a neurologist, anaesthetist, neurosurgeon and physician - had examined Tinasha.
The specialists wrote their final diagnosis of Tinasha in their respective reports which was submitted to the insurance company by the hospital.
"According to the chronology report, the medical officer who examined Tinasha left at 7.05am when his shift ended," Ramesh said.
But at 7.20am, the ward nurse found that Tinasha's condition suddenly deteriorated and she was unresponsive. Tinasha suffered a cardiac arrest.
The report said Tinasha was resuscitated and immediately transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where she was given artificial respiration.
"So what transpired between 7.05am and 7.20am? We have so many questions but no answers have been forthcoming from the hospital."
Ramesh said the report from Assunta Hospital only informed the family of what had transpired at the hospital, but did not mention why or how it happened.
"Why is there such a major contrast between the report given to the family and the one which was submitted to the insurance company?"
"We are Tinasha's family, not strangers, surely we should have been given access to the same information which was given to the insurance company."
Ramesh said they will be submitting the two reports to the Private Practice Control Unit of the Health Ministry.
"We will also do the same with the Malaysian Medical Association over Tinasha's case."
He said they would meet the Malaysian Medical Council today to provide details of the case.
Tinasha (pic, right) was admitted to Assunta Hospital on the night of November 16 with a fever.
Her parents claimed that her condition deteriorated within an eight-hour period which culminated in their daughter being declared brain dead.
She died at 11.40am at the hospital's intensive care unit on November 21.
Her family has blamed her death on the hospital, claiming negligence.
Assunta Hospital chief executive officer Peter Leong had said that all procedures were followed in treating Tinasha.
Despite this, the family lodged two police reports, one over her death and the other over the hospital's refusal to give them a copy of Tinasha's medical report.
The family said the hospital had told them it was withholding the report because they had brought the case to the media.
