Christoph Mueller will assume the post of managing director and group chief executive officer (CEO) of Malaysia Airline System Berhad (MAS) from May 1, the loss-making national air carrier said in a statement.

He will be replacing Ahmad Jauhari Yahya‎, who will step down on April 30 and serve as a non-executive director on the Board from May 1, 2015, to 31 December 2015.

"‎The decision to bring forward the leadership transition was made by the Board at its meeting on March 18, 2015," said MAS in a press release.
"Subsequently, the Board sought, through a letter dated 20 March 2015, and received approval on the same day from Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah), the sole shareholder of MAS, for Mueller’s appointment and related matters.‎"
MAS said the accelerated leadership transition will allow Mueller to lead the overall MAS restructuring effort, and provide him with enough time to prepare the new company Malaysia Airlines Berhad (NewCo) to begin operations.‎
"Following the leadership transition announced today, NewCo will be ready for the migration of MAS’ operations, assets and liabilities on 1 July 2015.

"NewCo employees will commence work on 1 September 2015 together with Mueller, who will officially assume the position of NewCo managing director and Group CEO on that date," said MAS.
MAS Chairman Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof said the company was pleased to welcome Mueller, and thanked Ahmad Jauhari for his years of service as MAS CEO.
Mueller said he was honoured by the appointment and looked forward to working on the restructuring to restore the airline's profitability.
"MAS is not just the national carrier of Malaysia, it is a symbol of national pride, and loyalty and affection towards the airline runs deep among Malaysians," he said in the press release.
MAS said NewCo will issue employment offer letters to selected MAS employees on 1 June 2015, and employment termination letters with a three-month notice to all its employees on the same day.
On August 27 last year, the Cabinet had approved the restructuring plan put forward by Khazanah for the airline which, among others, would see up to 6,000 jobs cut.
The plan was deemed necessary as MAS had been suffering financial losses for years.
