Lim, whose career in Parliament spans close to 40 years, said MPs are supposed to be protected under the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952, which specifies that lawmakers cannot be prosecuted for whatever they say in Parliament except when it comes to four subjects.
These are issues regarding the royalty, Articles 153 (Malay special privileges) and 152 (the national language) of the Federal Constitution, and citizenship, Lim told reporters after a forum in Kuala Lumpur tonight.
Nurul Izzah's speech in Parliament last week which touched on the Federal Court verdict on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy conviction, does not fall under any of these categories, Lim said.
"The Attorney-General must stop this, whoever arrested her has broken the law," Lim said.
Lim recounted his experience in the 1980s when a police officer told him that he was being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948 for remarks he had made in Parliament.
"I told the policeman that he had better check with the Attorney-General because he was breaking the law. The policeman never returned," Lim said after a forum on the issue of illegal immigrants in Sabah.
"What I had said in Parliament at the time was not related to any of the four subjects."
Nurul Izzah was arrested by police under the Sedition Act, and a statement by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim late tonight said she was being investigated under the act over the #KitaLawan rally and for making "contemptuous remarks" against the judiciary.
The #KitaLawan rally was held in the capital city, Kuala Lumpur, on March 7 to pressure the government into releasing Anwar and to call for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's resignation.
Nurul Izzah's speech in Parliament had criticised the judiciary for bowing to "political masters" in the Federal Court's verdict to uphold Anwar's sodomy conviction and jail sentence.
Former Perkasa vice-president Datuk Zulkifli Noordin had lodged a police report against Nurul Izzah over her speech.
