A lawmaker experienced first-hand one of the pet peeves of Kuala Lumpur commuters when she became a victim of an unscrupulous taxi driver who charged her RM79 for a 4km trip to the heart of the Kuala Lumpur city centre.
DAP's Lanang MP Alice Lau said that she booked an executive taxi to take her from the Parliament House to Bukit Bintang on June 2, a trip, which according to her booking details, should have cost her RM20 for a 4.65km journey.
But Lau said the taxi driver took two hours to get her to her destination, before charging RM79.
Lau, who is from Sarawak, was then given an empty receipt when she requested for one, prompting her to lodge a report with the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).
"But I did not get any feedback from SPAD. I had all the details with me, the plate number, the name of the taxi driver, and the details of the journey. Everything has been forwarded to SPAD," she said.
But it wasn't until she made a call to SPAD on Thursday that they finally responded to her complaint.
"I had to call them to ask them to check and only then they acknowledged receiving my complaint," she said.
"I do not understand why it took so long. All the details were readily available," she added.
She made the booking through the taxi booking application, MyTeksi.
"It is very disappointing because we need to curb errant taxi drivers. They will be the first people tourists will meet when they come to Malaysia," she said.
Lau's DAP colleague, Ipoh Timur MP Thomas Su, was also recently charged RM50 for a trip from Bukit Bintang to KL Sentral, after all the cabbies refused to turn on their meters for the trip.
"This shows that they are working in cahoots at times. SPAD should be doing more to tackle this problem," he said.
Taxi drivers had recently started protesting against alternative taxi services, such as Uber, which they deem to be an "illegal taxi service".
