DON'T BE A BUSYBODY, DR M: Let Umno fail, flounder & die...
Dear Dr Mahathir,
We met once a long time ago. You were giving a speech to students in Cambridge in the UK. I was the eager first question asker who proceeded to harangue you about corruption and bailing out companies linked to your son, rather than ask polite question.
As I recall, a rather unamused young man eventually came up and wrenched the microphone out of my hand just when I was starting to argue with your response, which assumed that I was an Anwar supporter.
I see you, too, have now had that infuriating experience of being shut up. Forgive me, Dr M, but I had a bloody good laugh over Nothing2Hide.
Before I totally piss you off, however, please hear me out. I have a serious point to make and I am hoping now — more than 15 years after I first made it — you may be slightly more receptive to it.
Let Umno — and Barisan Nasional — flounder, Dr M. Even fail and die if that is to be their fate.
There are all sorts of conspiracy theories floating that you are behind the latest revelations over money flows to Najib Razak's personal accounts.
Dr M
At the end of the day, his cry of "political sabotage" deserves no more than the weary eye-rolling it has gotten. But his accusation — that this is happening because he wouldn't do what you ask — maybe has a small kernel of truth in it?
He is not the first of your proteges to have eventually gotten it in the neck from you. I dare say — based on the list of 1MDB allegations over the past year, all innocent until proven guity yes, yes — he may well deserve it.
But what the hell does this say about your record of choosing successors? And of Umno's calibre of leaders? And the culture which puts them there? You have said your actions now are to ensure the political survival of Umno. But does it deserve to?
As you have said, Abdullah Badawi, even with the odd nap in public, has proven a far better leader than Najib. What does that say about Umno?
I think you have made the cardinal mistake of believing that other people are like you — that they long to do as much good as you have for your race. I don't begrudge you wanting to lift Malays out of poverty, to create leaders in politics and business whom others would emulate, with perhaps some shortcuts.
But that hasn't worked, has it? Not everyone — in fact possibly so far no one who's made it high up the greasy pole in Umno, based on its culture of patronage, has shown anything like the integrity, brains and guts you need to lead Umno, never mind the country.
Dr M — I am still as angry as before when I first asked you to step down because you either wouldn't or couldn't deal with corruption. Dare I say the time intervening has shown why I was right to be?
I wish your dreams had worked. I wish there were many more Malay leaders in Umno I could admire — the few members I do are all marginalised because they like clean hands.
So. If you regard this issue as one last thing to sort out as part of your legacy, I ask you to consider this: Do the bravest things possible and let Umno fail. If there are no leaders good enough to rise out of the ashes, then it doesn't deserve to last.
A change of government is what democracy should enable. The competition will be good for both sides. And if Umno fails, future leaders will build from the back foot. Pisang goreng seller to prime minister. Didn't it teach you what a private education at the finest schools in the UK did not?
I ask this of you as a non-Malay. You can do a Ridhuan Tee, ultra-kiasu number on me obviously wanting to take over the country. But I'm not a fool and population numbers speak for themselves. The non-Malays in this country will never be without the threat of violence until the Malay population matures politically.
I frankly like the skin on my back. Also, I am sick to death of the assumption of entitlement patronage has built. You know it only raises spoilt children.
So for all our sakes, Dr M. Let Umno stand on its own two feet. You've done your bit and I thank you. But you now also need the courage to let your failures have consequences. - ANN
