NAJIB'S BANK ACCOUNTS FROZEN? Secretive AG fails to give details
KUALA LUMPUR - Six bank accounts linked to a Wall Street Journal report claiming US$700 million was moved from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) to the prime minister has been frozen by the taskforce investigating the claim.
In a statement issued on behalf of the special taskforce involving four agencies, Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said the order to freeze the bank accounts was issued yesterday.
“Additionally, the Special Taskforce has seized documents related to 17 accounts from two banks to facilitate investigations.
“The taskforce also seized documents linked to non-compliance of Bank Negara rules and regulations from the aforementioned banks,” Gani said in the statement.
In a report on Friday, the WSJ, citing documents from Malaysian investigators currently scrutinising the troubled 1MDB’s financials, claimed that a money trail showed that US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) were moved between government agencies, banks and companies before it ended up in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s accounts.
Aside from Gani, the other signatories in the statement were Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohammed.
The statement did not identify the bank accounts frozen, but Sarawak Report previously published several AmBank account numbers that were allegedly used for the transactions.
On Saturday, Gani confirmed that the special taskforce was already investigating the claim published by the WSJ, and that raids were conducted on three companies implicated in the report.
The firms named were former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International, Ihsan Perdana Sdn Bhd and Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd.
Najib has denied taking money for personal gain and categorised the allegations as “political sabotage”.
An aide also said Najib will file a legal suit against WSJ today. - Malay Mail
