SPAN: CRITICAL TO BUILD LANGAT 2 WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

Selangor Water
(The Star) – As long as the Langat 2 water distribution system is not built, residents in Ulu Langat will continue to face water woes, according to the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).
Its chairman Datuk Ismail Kassim said it had written to three state authorities seeking approval for its construction but had yet to receive consent.
“The Langat 2 water treatment plant is already being constructed but works to build its distribution system has yet to begin. As long as it does not start, residents in Ulu Langat will continue to face water problems.”
Areas in Ulu Langat, including Semenyih, Beranang, Kajang, Langat and Balakong, were facing water cuts at present, said Ismail.
As of Friday, he said Sg Selangor and Sg Tinggi, two of the biggest dams in the state, recorded 80.26% and 76.94% storage level.
“Last year, they were at 41.91% and 62.49%,” he said.
He said that although the water level of dams in the Klang Valley had yet to reach critical stage, there was a shortage of treated water in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, with a margin reserve of less than 2%.
To resolve the issue, SPAN was pushing for water rationing but the Selangor government was reluctant to implement the move, said Ismail.
“We have to get the Selangor government to agree before we can carry it out,” he said.
Ismail said there should be rationing on a rotational basis so that other areas would have the same chance to access water.
“By doing so, the affected consumers can get their water supply through pipes for two days and should be able to store some for use over the next two days,” he said.
With rationing, he said, residents would not have to rely on Syabas tanks, a heavy chore for those living in high rise buildings.
He said mitigation measures carried out by the Selangor government was but a temporary solution.
“To ensure a continuous supply of water in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya in the long run, we need the Langat 2 water distribution system to be set up as soon as possible,” he said.
