Zaid is pessimistic that an investigation into the millions allegedly received by the PM from 1MDB will amount to anything.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim told the rakyat there was no need to sit and wait with bated breath for a probe into allegations that 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB)-linked funds were channeled into Prime Minister Najib Razak’s personal accounts.
Zaid said investigations of a similar nature had been carried out in the past on various other individuals and incidents of alleged corruption and implied that despite the effort nothing had come of it.
“Everybody excited about the Probe, mother of all probes. But we had similar experiences before; Linghan (Lingam), Beng Hock, Altantuya etc etc,” he tweeted last night and added, “When will we ever learn?”
He also cynically remarked, “U (sic) think the 4 top civil servants would create history and do the unthinkable? Wake me up when they do.”
Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail, Bank Negara Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed announced in a joint statement yesterday that an investigation would be launched into allegations by The Wall Street Journal that USD700 million was funnelled into the PM’s personal accounts before the previous general elections.
