KUALA LUMPUR: The electricity tariff rate will not be raised until next year, said Energy Commission chairman Abdul Razak Abdul Majid.
“After that it may be reviewed based on generation costs,” he told reporters after attending the Senior Officials Meeting on Energy Plus Three meeting with three dialogue partners in conjunction with the 33rd Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting here today.
He did not indicate a change in policy on domestic users for usage below 300KW/hour.
He said electricity tariff in Malaysia was among the cheapest compared with other Asean countries.
On February 11, Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Maximus Ongkili, announced the Cabinet decision to reduce electricity tariff by 2.25 sen for every kilowatt/hour for peninsular Malaysia consumers from March 1 until June 30 this year.
Meanwhile, on dependency on other sources of power generation such as coal, fuel, natural gas and hydro in the future, Abdul Razak said, there was still a need to balance between the different sources of those energy mix as the target for renewable energy usage was only 5% by 2020.
