Everything I do, I don’t do for Umno, says Jamal

Jamal Yunos denies acting for party in carrying out Red Shirts activities, saying there was no discussion at the Umno Supreme Council on the matter.

PETALING JAYA: Jamal Yunos does not believe his position as an Umno division chief should be used to tarnish the party following the actions of the Red Shirts movement that he leads.

“From the beginning I have always said this. Have you ever seen me say that whatever I do is in my capacity as an Umno leader? Never,” the Sungai Besar Umno division chief said, according to The Star.

Referring to comments from Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar and Supreme Council member Nazri Aziz that the Red Shirts movement does not represent Umno, Jamal said that was a fact simply because it was never discussed at the party level.

“If I had represented Umno, the Supreme Council would have discussed it and given me a mandate. But that never happened, they never discussed it,” Jamal told the daily in an interview from overseas.

Saying that he was only acting as the president of the Gabungan NGO Malaysia, Jamal added however, that many of the followers of the Red Shirts movement were also Umno members.

“I have always done it as the president of Gabungan NGO Malaysia, and in this case, I mainly represent Gerakan Merah Malaysia.

“But these (Umno) people are also a part of the coalition of NGOs and these organisations (NGOs) were founded by them. They are made up of businessmen, residents associations, motor clubs and so many others,” he was quoted as saying by The Star.

Jamal also welcomed any investigation into his actions and that of the Red Shirts supporters, as well as the alleged seditious Facebook posting attributed to him.

“All these lies and fake accounts need to be investigated and I believe this is the most effective way to find the perpetrators and clear my name.

“I will do my best to cooperate with the authorities in any way possible once I return to Malaysia,” he told The Star, adding: “For whatever mistakes I have made, if I have done it and it is proven, then I will accept it and let the police take action.”
