MIC president Dr S Subramaniam has taken a wait-and-see stance on whether he would resign or in relation to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s 'hudud' motion.
Asked whether he will resign, he said simply: “Just wait and see."
The health minister was earlier asked on MIC’s final stance in relation to Abdul Hadi’s bill which seeks to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 or Act 355.
“We have announced that (MIC’s stance) previously,” he told a press conference after officiating the 'Clean, Safe and Healthy Canteen Awards' in Shah Alam today.
Asked on the party’s current stance, Subramaniam said MIC had discussed the matter with other Barisan Nasional component parties on a way to overcome the issue.
“So we will follow what that has been agreed upon,” he said.
Subramaniam was among the various BN leaders who previously said they would quit the cabinet if hudud is implemented.
MCA and Gerakan leaders Liow Tiong Lai, Wee Ka Siong and Mah Siew Keong had also threatened to quit if hudud is implemented.
Abdul Hadi's motion to table his bill was pushed from fourth to seventh place in the Order Paper today, as the Dewan Rakyat meets for the second day of its final session for the year.
Previously, the motion had made it to the debate stage in the last Parliament session after Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said bumped it up the Order Paper.
She did this at Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's behest.
Hadi's bill is referred to as the 'hudud bill' as it would ultimately pave the way for the partial implementation of the Islamic penal code in PAS-ruled Kelantan.
However, despite the Kelantan state government having passed an enactment to that effect, it cannot be implemented as long as the punishment limits meted out by the syariah courts remain. - Mkini
