Why speak now but keep mum when Shahruddin was with Umno, DAP rep asks MCA

Who is MCA to question DAP's stand on Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (Bersatu) secretary-general's revoke-citizenship-for-failing-Bahasa remark, asks Skudai assemblyperson Dr Boo Cheng Hau.
Dr Boo pointed out that when Shahruddin Salleh first made the statement in the Johor State Assembly, when he was still an Umno member, MCA and other BN components were silent.
"MCA, Umno and neither had any BN state assemblyman ever refuted what Shahruddin said, as an Umno backbencher at that juncture of time," said Dr Boo, adding that by contrast, the then Pakatan Rakyat elected representives were up in arms over the statement.

Dr Boo said that unlike Pakatan Harapan component parties, MCA and other BN major component parties are race-based, and this has polarized Malaysian politics along racial lines.

"The race-based BN component parties are the root cause for racial politics in Malaysia, and they are not qualified to demand for DAP to explain our consistent stand against racial rhetoric and politics," argued Dr Boo.

The Skudai asemblyperson who had previously sounded out Shahruddin over the matter said that he personally welcomed the Jorak assemblyperson's explanation that it was a question and not a suggestion.

"But I would insist it is more sensible and effective to integrate minorities and new citizens into the mainstream society with more inclusive, effective, humane policies."

He argued that revocation of citizenship for whatever reason is not considered humane in any way. Neither is keeping a large number of stateless Malaysian-born residents something that we as a nation should be proud of, he said.

"The more effective and inclusive way to adopt new citizens would be to set up free official Bahasa Malaysia learning programmes according to the applicants’ social backgrounds and learning capability as permitted by the Federal Constitution than merely offering tests and keep failing them.

"Setting up Malaysian branded international schools for Malaysian expatriates’ children and improving our education system and teaching methods rather than stripping off their citizenship is a more practical, effective and humane way to promote Bahasa Malaysia."

Dr Boo urge all Malaysians and politicians to be more sensible and rational in finding solutions for the country instead of working on such inflammatory rhetoric.
Shahruddin received brickbats from BN politicians for his previous statement over the matter, soon after he was named Bersatu secretary-general. -Mkini
