Bersih says ‘no’, Red Shirts say ‘yes’ to DBKL cleaning bills

DBKL will have to prove rally participants damaged the landscape around KLCC before it pays RM26,500 cleanup bill, say Bersih 5 organisers.

PETALING JAYA: The organisers of Bersih 5 will not settle any cleanup bills presented by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for the rally on Nov 19.
Bersih 2.0 treasurer Thomas Fann said there was no basis for DBKL to send any cleaning bill because the organisers left the streets cleaner than before they started the rally.
“We had hundreds of volunteers who picked up litter on the streets throughout the rally.
“We should be the one sending our cleaning bills to DBKL for doing their job,” he told FMT.
Fann was commenting on reports that DBKL had assessed the damage to the landscape at KLCC and came up with the RM26,500 bill.
DBKL are also expected to initiate legal action if Bersih fails to pay the bill.
Fann said DBKL will have to prove the landscape at KLCC was not damaged before the rally participants came there.
“DBKL must also prove the damages were by Bersih supporters.
“We did not settle the last one for Bersih 4; we will not settle this one either. We will see them in court.”
Fan said ratepayers paid DBKL to clean the streets of KL and to do the landscaping and many of the peaceful protesters were KL ratepayers.
“DBKL should just do its job instead of playing politics.”
Meanwhile, Red Shirts leader Jamal Yunos said he will pay triple the cost of the cleaning bill, which amounts to RM873, for the mess at Padang Merbok during the rally.
“Even though we didn’t get the permit for the gathering, we will pay three times the amount.
“We also want to thank DBKL for chasing us away like we are not Malaysian citizens,” he said sarcastically.
“We have no problems in settling the bill.”
DBKL socio-economic development executive director Mohd Saufi Muhammad said the Bersih 5 organisers were billed because of damage to the shrubs on the road dividers around KLCC area and along Jalan Ampang.
“The Red Shirts will only be billed for the cost of collecting the litter they left behind at Padang Merbok. Our legal department will send out the bills.”
