DAP: Arrest of 3 MPs an insult to Dewan Rakyat

Deputy Speaker Ronald Kiandee defers matters related to detention of PKR and DAP lawmakers for Speaker Pandikar Amin to decide.
DEWAN RAKYAT
kulaKUALA LUMPUR: The opposition’s request to debate the arrest of three lawmakers over the Bersih 5 rally was deferred by Deputy Speaker Ronald Kiandee today.
M Kulasegaran (DAP-Ipoh Barat) raised the issue under the Parliamentary Standing Order’s Point of Order.
“Anthony Loke (DAP-Seremban), Zuraida Kamaruddin (PKR-Ampang) and Tian Chua (PKR-Batu) were arrested.
“We feel the police have violated the privileges of MPs, their freedom of expression and freedom of movement.
”It is an insult to Parliament,” Kulasegaran said.
However, Kiandee said: “This doesn’t need immediate action. Speaker (Pandikar Amin Mulia) will make a ruling later.”
Loke was arrested on Friday on charges of having the intention to topple the government while the other two were arrested on Saturday night after the rally.
Another lawmaker, Hanipa Maidin (Amanah-Sepang) raised Standing Order 21(1) of the Dewan Rakyat.
He wanted a debate related to the arrest of electoral reform watchdog Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah under Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, for allegedly posing a threat to parliamentary democracy.
“I want to pose a question to the Home Minister on the arrest of Maria Chin.”
Kiandee however, said he will refer the matter to Pandikar.
At this point, Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Gelang Patah) interjected, saying that the arrest of the three MPs was an urgent matter that cannot be postponed.
“You are sitting on the chair. You should decide, not postpone,” Lim told Kiandee. -Mkini
