Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged the public to fill up the ranks of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and join its mission to defeat BN and Umno in the elections.
In a post on his blog today, Mahathir said many bumiputera have already signed up as members while non-bumiputera have signed up as associate members.
"It is important for Bersatu to have a large membership as soon as possible. Therefore I urge all pribumi who are not members of any opposition parties to register as members.
"Your association with Bersatu will contribute to the national restoration which would bring good to us all," said Mahathir, who is Bersatu's chairperson.
He said Malaysia was once a respected country and served as an example for the developing world, but not any more due to the current administration.
"(There was once a time when) wherever Malaysians went, they could be proud of the praises given to us for our development.
"But today, the rakyat are embarrassed by foreigners who now look down on us because Malaysia is among the most corrupt countries, where the prime minister stands accused of embezzling billions of ringgit.
"(The country is) plagued with debt, the rakyat are burdened with taxes and high cost of living, there is no rule of law and the country's development is stagnating," said Mahathir.
He said that the present administration does not respect democracy and the freedom of expression has been curtailed.
"People are subjected to detention without trial and there are no inquests to determine cause of death. The decisions of the government and their officers cannot be questioned in court," said Mahathir.
Bersatu announced their official leadership line-up yesterday.
The party's president is Muhyiddin Yassin while his deputy is Mukhriz Mahathir. -Mkini
