DR MAHATHIR THREATENED WITH ARREST: ‘CONTINUE TO INCITE HATRED AGAINST NAJIB & WE WILL LOCK YOU UP’ – NUR JAZLAN
KUALA LUMPUR — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad could be detained if he continues to incite hatred towards the government, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
Nur Jazlan said Dr Mahathir deserved respect as a former leader, but added that his continued action could leave authorities with no other choice, according to a report in Utusan Malaysia.
The Pulai MP also said authorities were cautious as the former PM may be intentionally provoking a response in order to get arrested and gain public sympathy.
“We know Dr Mahathir wants to get arrested but we will not fall into his trap,” Jazlan was quoted as saying.
On Saturday, Dr Mahathir, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, took part in the Bersih 5 street demonstration in Kuala Lumpur that was attended by thousands.
He urged Malaysians to reject a government that oppresses its people and uses laws to silence criticism.
Dr Mahathir, who was accused of curtailing civil liberties during his time as prime minister, said the attendance of thousands of ordinary Malaysians at the street demonstration showed that people wanted a change in government.
The veteran politician claimed the use of security laws against key opposition and Bersih leaders ahead of the rally showed that the current government is undemocratic and does not listen to its people.
