PETALING JAYA: Ean Yong Hian Wah of the DAP believes that a fake news report alleging he had aided in settling a dispute between a couple and an enforcement officer was the work of political enemies out to paint a negative picture of the opposition.
In labelling the report, which went viral on social media, as “totally unfounded”, the Selangor exco member also denied knowing the couple who had harassed the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) officer.
Neither did MBSA, he clarified, issue any instruction to revoke the police report lodged against the husband and wife.
“This is the work of our political enemies and we can expect more of these kinds of news to be produced in the future,” he told FMT when contacted.
Earlier today, Yong lodged a report at the Shah Alam police station regarding the news report, published in www.negarapakatanrakyat.com, which he described as defamatory.
A check by FMT showed that the said article has been taken down.
Apart from claiming that Yong represented the couple who offered to compensate the enforcement officer, the article also claimed that MBSA had directed the officer to retract the police report.
MBSA has since denied instructing the officer to do any such thing.
Yong said he was not sure who the owners of the website were, but that he would consider taking legal action against them once their identities were revealed.
He also urged the public to verify news they received before spreading it.
“The fact that the couple was jailed and fined is proof the report is fake.”
A husband and wife were yesterday sentenced to 14 days in jail and fined RM3,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here over their harassment of an MBSA officer.
Lor Ka Hoo, 35, and his wife Tan Sit Fun, 30, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to intimidate a public servant, Nurul Ain Isa, 23, from discharging her duty. -FMT
