Hindraf: Trump victory and Brexit show unexpected can happen

Hindraf Makkal Sakthi Chairman P Waythamoorthy says lessons from both Trump and Brexit prove that Umno and BN can be defeated.
KUALA LUMPUR: A human rights advocate has pointed out that Donald Trump doesn’t really represent the Republican Party but yet he went on to do the unexpected and seize the US presidency.
Hindraf Makkal Sakthi Chairman P Waythamoorthy said this victory and the recent unexpected Brexit result had lessons for Malaysians in that they proved BN can be defeated.
“The Opposition can march into Putrajaya and seize the reins of power, if it’s inclusive,” said Waytha.
“The Opposition must embrace all who are against the incumbents in Putrajaya.”
He said he made a public statement, two weeks ago, offering Hindraf’s open and unconditional offer to assist the Opposition in its bid for power in Putrajaya.
Indians may not form a majority in even one seat, parliamentary or state, but they decide in 67 parliamentary seats, assured Waythamoorthy.
“We can work on the 35 per cent Indian swing votes.”
Given the Hindraf factor, he said, at least 40 parliamentary seats in Malaya were at stake.
“Perak and Negri Sembilan would be in the bag for the Opposition if Hindraf comes in.
“In 2013, Umno/BN obtained 45 per cent of the Indian votes counted, up from 15 per cent in 2008.”
Umno/BN’s extra 35 per cent Indian votes, said Waythamoorthy, came from the 800,000 displaced estate workers.
He conceded that he made a mistake in 2013 when Hindraf, under his leadership, reached out to Umno/BN and embraced it.
“In hindsight, it was wrong. We never expected Umno/BN to take Hindraf for a ride on the RM4.5 billion memorandum of understanding it signed to secure Indian votes.”
