Johor Felda settlement road collapses into gaping hole

KOTA TINGGI: Villagers in Felda Penggeli Timur near here were shocked when the main road in the settlement collapsed into a gaping hole.

A 30m stretch of the road collapsed into a 20m-deep hole following heavy rain Sunday evening.

Village chief Hambari Abd Rahman said Monday the residents had noticed cracks on the road due to soil erosion a few days earlier.

However, they never expected such major landslide would occur.

“It did not occur to us that the soil erosion problem would worsen.

"Thankfully, no one was hurt,” he said.

Deputy Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, who is Tenggara MP, said in a statement that the state Public Works Department (JKR) had set aside RM200,000 for repairing works in the affected area.

“For the time being, the road is closed for safety measures and the clean-up operations will be carried out on Tuesday," she said.
