Not everyone takes bribes, Ibrahim Ali tells Dr M

The Perkasa president says it is unbecoming of a statesman to accuse individuals of all sorts of things just because they are not on his side.

PETALING JAYA: Perkasa’s president took to task Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his tendency to label anyone who disagrees with him as someone who receives bribes.
Ibrahim Ali said it was unbecoming of a statesman to accuse individuals of all sorts of things just because they are not on his side.
He was responding to the former premier’s statement that he was disappointed with Perkasa’s decision to contest in the 14th general election (GE14), adding that the move was made to benefit Prime Minister Najib Razak.
“I completely deny the allegation and besides, I’ve contested as an independent before.
“I do not support Najib, that is ‘fitnah’ (slander). The reason Perkasa is contesting is because we disagree with Najib and want to bring about our own agenda,” he told FMT.
On Nov 20, Ibrahim announced that Perkasa would field 50 candidates to contest under an independent ticket in the GE14 with a focus on Malay-majority areas.
In a press conference earlier today, Mahathir said he was disappointed because previously Ibrahim had stated his commitment to always support him but had refused to join his Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) merely because the party is working alongside DAP.
Ibrahim, who is also a former Pasir Mas MP, said he had deep respect for Mahathir but stressed that he had his own principles.
“I do not want to support him blindly because I’m not a cow. He has also got to respect my stance.”
Ibrahim said in fact he had announced to Mahathir himself that if the former premier were to work with DAP, the Perkasa president would not support him.
“If this is Tun’s way (to accuse all who oppose him as supporting Najib and taking bribes), he will be alone. My advice to Tun is to not make such accusations.”
Ibrahim said Perkasa’s decision to contest independently in the GE14 was so that candidates who won would not be tied to parties in all matters.
“When we contest under a party, we have to abide by that party’s whip. In Parliament, we have to support and vote based on the leader’s whip. If we’re independent, then we have the independence to speak and vote.
“This is the reason we are contesting independently. It is not a question of giving BN an edge.” -FMT
