Nurul Izzah: Sosma shouldn’t even be used on Jamal Yunos

KUALA LUMPUR: The Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012 should not even be used on Red Shirts leader Jamal Yunos, said Nurul Izzah Anwar, adding to the chorus of discontent on the use of the controversial law against Bersih chief Maria Chin Abdullah.
“Frankly speaking, no matter how much I detest Jamal Yunus and his words, I would never subject anyone to these conditions,” she told reporters outside the Dewan Rakyat.
The Lembah Pantai lawmaker said this when asked to comment on the arrest of Maria under Sosma.
Maria was arrested on Friday for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy. According to reports, she is being held in solitary confinement at an undisclosed location.
Nurul Izzah also said that the repressive security law should not be used against legitimate terrorists, as there were proper laws to address terrorism in the country.
Terengganu Amanah chairman Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah also expressed similar sentiments, saying that despite Jamal’s threatening remarks ahead of the Bersih 5 rally, no one should be detained under Sosma.
“We don’t condone anyone to be investigated under Sosma, not Maria and not even Jamal.
“The Act should only be used against terrorists.”
The use of Sosma on political dissidents instead of terrorism implies that other security laws such as the National Security Council (NSC) Act could be abused, Raja Bahrin said.
“Now, how can the government assure us that the NSC won’t be used against people voicing out dissent.
“That is our concern. If Sosma can be misused, what about NSC?” -FMT
