PETALING JAYA: A student activist leader is the latest to be arrested in the police’s sudden Friday crackdown on those suspected to be involved in tomorrow’s Bersih 5 rally.
According to Suaram activist Amir Abdul Hadi, Muhammad Luqman Nul Hakim Zul Razali, a fourth-year Islamic political science student and member of Kesatuan Mahasiswa Malaysia in Universiti Malaya, was arrested in Genting Sempah.
Luqman is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting. If convicted, he could be jailed up to two years, or fined, or both.
His arrest follows those of DAP’s Ronnie Liu in front of the Bukit Aman police headquarters for incitement to riot and DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke over his speech at the Pakatan Harapan Convention last Saturday.
Police also nabbed Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and secretariat member Mandeep Singh following a raid at their office in Petaling Jaya this afternoon.
The raid resulted in the confiscation of 10 laptops, two large document boxes, and two mobile phones. Maria’s and Mandeep’s identification cards were also seized.
Police have also questioned Klang MP Charles Santiago of DAP over his involvement in the rally, called by Bersih 2.0 to press for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has maintained that the Bersih 5 rally and a counter-rally planned by the Red Shirts movement led by Umno leader Jamal Yunos were illegal and warned of police action. -FMT
