Dr M writes to student activist, urges youths to emulate her

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has written to student activist Anis Syafiqah Mohd Yusof, urging her to fight on.
This was after UM suspended her for a semester and fined her RM400 for her involvement in the “TangkapMO1” rally.
Mohd Luqman Hakim Fazli and Mohamad Luqman Nul Haqim Zul Razali were also slapped with identical punishments, while Suhail Wan Azhar was fined RM400.
Anis, who shared the letter on Facebook, thanked Mahathir for his words of encouragement and expressed hoped that the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA) will be abolished.
“It is my hope that if Pakatan Harapan and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) win in the general election, the UUCA will no longer stifle students who voice out for a better Malaysia,” she said.
The letter was emailed to her and bore Mahathir’s signature.
Fine example for others
In the letter, Mahathir, who is also Bersatu chairperson, said he was disturbed by the disciplinary action UM had taken her.
Mahathir noted that Anis was worried about the nation due to the wrongdoings of ‘MO1' and UM should have supported her courage and concern.
“You are not alone in your concern. I am at an old age and may escape the suffering brought upon by MO1.
“But this does not mean that I will stand by and let MO1 commit transgressions as he pleases.

“I hope you will continue to face the tribulations as there is no struggle without sacrifice,” he said.
Mahathir also expressed hope that more will follow in her footsteps.
“I hope other youths will emulate your courage,” he said.
The “TangkapMO1" (Arrest MO1) rally took place in August after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) said its investigation found US$3.5 billion from Malaysian state fund 1MDB was misappropriated.
The DOJ said US$731 million of that money went to a senior government official, which it did not name but described as “Malaysian Official 1 (MO1)”.- Mkini
