Environmental activists released, thank supporters

Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (Peka) president Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil and the organisation's administrative officer Norhayati Shahrom have been released from police detention.
Peka Selangor uploaded a photograph of the duo posing with their lawyer Siti Kassim earlier today.
"Thank you for all your prayers, support and warm wishes. Shariffa and Norhayati have been released," said Peka Selangor.
Shariffa Sabrina, who bears the "Puan Sri" title, was alleged to have insulted the Johor royal family through her Facebook page.
Her organisation is an environmentalist groups which often speaks out against logging activities.
The duo were arrested on Thursday night. Police then secured a three day remand order and held them in Johor Baru.
According to the police, they were investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA) which relates to "improper use of network facilities or network services".
If found guilty, the duo can be jailed for up to a year or fined up to RM50,000.

In a related development, Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad said Putrajaya should be commending Shariffa Sabrina for her work instead of arresting her.
"(She raises issues) of public and general environmental concerns. Instead of investigating those responsible for approving the logging licenses, lack of enforcement on environmental conservation by authorities and deviant logging contractors, those reporting the matters were arrested and harrased.
"They should be commended for their actions," said Raja Kamarul Bahrin in a statement today.- Mkini
