No compromise for so-called NGOs that try to cause chaos

PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Selangor has called for action to be taken against certain quarters who have tried to disrupt the country’s stability under the guise of non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, in a decree issued on his 71st birthday celebration today, said these quarters “must be stopped without any compromise”, the New Straits Times reported.

“I have seen that there are certain quarters who hide behind the name of NGOs.

“(They are) attempting to create confusion among Malaysians through their actions which can cause chaos, and disrupt the stability and security of this country.

“The actions of these displeasing quarters must be stopped without any compromise, so that the rakyat, foreign tourists and investors will have confidence (in our country),” he said during the ceremony at Istana Shah Alam, Selangor.

He also called for sensitive issues such as religion to be handled with more wisdom and maturity to avoid creating tension among Malaysia’s multiracial community.

“It came to my understanding that as of late, issues that touch on racial sensitivities had been increasingly raised by irresponsible quarters, who question matters pertaining to religion and beliefs.

“It is my wish that sensitive issues that touch on religion and beliefs be dealt with wisely by all to avoid misunderstanding.”

The Sultan advised all quarters to respect the duties carried out by the state’s Islamic institutions including the Selangor Religious Authority (Jais) and Selangor Islamic Council (Mais).

The credibility and image of these institutions must be defended from those attempting to manipulate them for their own political agendas, he added.

Political leaders and government officials also have a duty to protect the nation’s prosperity, and this can only be done if they remain honest and serve with integrity, he said.

“I am very worried that it will be disastrous for Selangor if the values of trustworthiness in the community continue to diminish, especially among leaders who abuse their power and position besides being involved in corruption.

“Corruption will also bring negative implications to the country’s leadership. In fact, their integrity and transparency will be in question.

“This will result in the country’s leaders losing their credibility in the eyes of the people,” the English daily quoted the sultan as saying. -FMT
