She regrets that the six-month suspension from Universiti Malaya will affect her final-year studies.
KUALA LUMPUR: Student activist Anis Syafiqah Mohd Yusof vowed that she will not be silenced by the six-month suspension from Universiti Malaya (UM) and RM400 fine for her involvement in the “#TangkapMalaysianOfficial1 (MO1)” rally.
She said the penalties would not stop her from speaking the truth for the undergraduates and Malaysians as a whole.
However, she agreed that the university’s decision, announced today, would affect her studies and delay the completion of her education as it would have been her second last semester as a linguistics student.
“But I will continue to speak up for tertiary students.
“For me, it (the penalties) is an act of intimidation directed at me, my three university friends and other undergraduates.
“It is so that we will not speak up on issues affecting Malaysia,” she told FMT today.
She was responding to the UM disciplinary panel’s decision to penalise her for her participation in the rally on Aug 27.
Anis, together with Muhammad Luqman Nul Haqim Zul Razali, Muhammad Luqman Hakim Mohd Fazli and Suhail Wan Azahar, were earlier suspended by UM for participating in the rally at Dataran Merdeka.
They were found guilty of acting in a manner detrimental and prejudicial to the interests and good reputation of the university; acting in a manner detrimental to public safety; and violating the university’s regulations by organising and participating in the rally.
Anis and three others were found guilty by UM on Dec 9 of disciplinary offences linked to the Aug 27 rally in Kuala Lumpur.
“It’s a shame the university is punishing us,” Anis added.
The #TangkapMO1 rally was organised by a coalition of students and youth groups calling for the arrest of the “MO1” (Malaysian Official No 1) named in the United States’ Department of Justice’s recent civil suit linked to state fund 1MDB.
Anis and the other three undergraduates were issued a show cause letter and summoned to a disciplinary hearing by the university on Oct 22.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia student Asheeq Ali was suspended for a semester and fined RM200 for his participation in the rally.
He was charged with tarnishing the university’s reputation and violating the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 by participating in the Aug 27 rally. -FMT
