Accused of slander, Rafizi says will step up 'exposes' on Tabung Haji

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli is determined to come out with more revelations relating to pilgrimage fund board Lembaga Tabung Haji.
This was after Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Islamic affairs Jamil Khir Baharom insinuated that the Pandan MP was behind a “slanderous campaign” against Tabung Haji.
“As such, I will return to focus on issues involving losses and leakages concerning Tabung Haji,” said Rafizi in a statement today.
“Next week, apart from the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) issues, I will also start a new series of revelations on Tabung Haji.”
Rafizi’s decision came in light of Jamil who was reported as saying that funds of up to RM500 million had been withdrawn by Tabung Haji depositors last year.
Jamil was quoted as saying by Berita Harian Online that the “irresponsible” action made by representatives from the opposition had led to 3,600 depositors to withdraw their funds and from performing the haj.
In response to this, Rafizi said although Jamil did not dare to mention his name, “the whole world knew” that he had meant Rafizi as the opposition lawmaker who had "defamed" Tabung Haji.
Rafizi however pointed out that Tabung Haji had yet to sue him if he had indeed defamed it.
“I understand why Tabung Haji doesn’t want to go to court because I will be calling many witnesses including former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz who had warned of Tabung Haji’s reserves being in the negative,” he said.
Instead, Tabung Haji had lodged a police report against him, with Rafizi pointing out that doing so would not need Tabung Haji to provide evidence why it believed he had defamed the board.
Meanwhile, Rafizi argued that more contributors would be withdrawing their funds from Tabung Haji if the new revelations were not answered properly due to them losing confidence in the board’s management.
“Jamil should realise that it is his duty to solve the problems surrounding the Tabung Haji management to gain the rakyat’s confidence instead of playing politics by making the rakyat hate me whenever he fails to answer the questions I raised,” said Rafizi.

Among his revelations, Rafizi had claimed that his analysis of Tabung Haji's financial statement ending Dec 31, 2015 showed the pilgrimage fund would not have enough money to pay its depositors if they withdrew their funds all at once.
“An analysis of Tabung Haji's repayment capability showed if all depositors were to withdraw their deposits together, Tabung Haji would be short of RM3 billion to make the repayments," he had said last year.
Rafizi himself had withdrawn a total of RM530,000 from his Tabung Haji account last year.- Mkini
