PETALING JAYA: There is no necessity to hold an identification (ID) parade if Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad recognises the suspects who attacked him outside the Parliament building last year, a criminal lawyer says.
“The parade would have been an exercise in futility if Khalid had positively identified his assailants through photographs or CCTV footage,” N Sivananthan said.
He, however, said it all depended on the contents of Khalid’s police report or the information provided to police when his statement was recorded.
Sivananthan was commenting on Khalid’s disappointment that none of the suspects who attacked him were in the line-up at a recent identification parade organised by the police who are investigating the case.
Khalid, who is also Amanah information chief said he had seen his main assailants on CCTV footage and in photographs of the scuffle, and it was clear they were not in the parade.
“I didn’t see the main assailants in the parade. It was that guy wearing a blue-and-white checkered shirt and another wearing a coat.
“And the son of the deputy minister was not there as well. It is very disappointing. Most of them were just bystanders,” he had told FMT.
On Nov 24, Khalid, was attacked by a mob of about 30 people as he was entering the Parliament building. He was, however, shielded by security officers.
Khalid said the police should have known the identities of those involved as all were required to register their names and identity card numbers before they were allowed into the Parliament grounds.
Khalid said he had told police that a parade was not necessary because the identities of the assailants were obviously known to them, adding that the suspects had also surrendered themselves to the police a day after the scuffle.
Earlier reports stated that among those in the mob was the son of Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister and Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman. The others were reportedly Umno Youth members from Pasir Salak.
They were there to show their displeasure at Khalid, who had called Tajuddin “menteri sial” (damned minister) after Tajuddin referred to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok as “the only woman with a Kok” in Parliament.-FMT
