PETALING JAYA: The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) is hunting down tax evaders with leads given by some 400 “whistleblowers”, says IRB deputy CEO Mohd Nizom Sairi.
According to a Sin Chew Daily report, Nizom said some 120 IRB enforcement officers had started paying courtesy visits to these “informers” in Kuala Lumpur yesterday as part of an operation to get more information on those evading tax.
He said these “whistleblowers” were identified by IRB as those having business dealings with suspected tax evaders in the services sector. They included those providing professional services, entertainers and legal services.
These “informers” will have to provide IRB with details of these business dealings, including the amounts paid by a company or individuals, and commissions given to insurance agents and brokers.
They will also be quizzed on sales permits, incentives for projects and tenders, petrol and diesel supplies, and real estate sales.
Nizom said the IRB wanted to resolve the issue of tax evasion, increase awareness of tax payment and collect revenue for the country.
He added IRB would give these “informers” a letter, known as a Form Q .
The “informers” will be required to reply to the letter within 30 days, failing which they will be given a reminder.
According to Section 120 (1) of the Income Tax Act, an informant can be fined up to RM20,000 or jailed for up to six months or both if they do not respond to the IRB within 21 days.
Nizom said IRB could also issue compound fines of up to RM2,000 to those who do not offer their cooperation.
He said the IRB was seeking to rope in 27 new “informants” in its latest operation.
Nizom said 176 reminders would be issued to those who had not responded to the Form Q and 197 final warnings will be issued to those who had not been cooperating.-FMT
