KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) spent RM6 million last year repairing 1,300 broken train windscreens.
KTMB corporate communications manager Siti Badariah Wan Hanafi said nine people had been caught vandalising assets over the past two years and had been handed over to the police.
“They can be charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code, and upon conviction, can be jailed up to two years or fined, or both.”
She said KTMB could also seek damages from the culprits through civil claims.
Siti Badariah said windscreens were mostly broken by stones thrown at passing trains by children.
She said no passengers had been hurt but the broken windows disrupted train services as they had to be replaced to ensure safety.
These train windscreens met international standards and were not the same type used in cars, she added.
Siti Badariah said KTMB had used dogs to patrol railway tracks and conducted operations to arrest vandals.
Various anti-vandalism campaigns have been held in schools and residential areas near railway tracks but these attacks continue. -FMT
