The Royal Selangor Club (RSC) has denied allegations that it had cancelled a booking by former de factor law minister Zaid Ibrahim due to political pressure.
Instead, it said that its function rooms are available for personal, social, and sporting events only, and Zaid’s press conference falls into none of those categories.
“The RSC is solely a social and sporting members’ club. Members are permitted to book the available function rooms for personal, social, and sporting events only.
“The RSC was notified by a member of the purpose and aim of the intended event on Feb 7. Since it was neither a social or sporting event, it was necessary for the general committee to cancel the booking in line with the club’s policies and operating procedures.
“This was therefore an internal matter and not the outcome of interventions from third parties,” said the club’s general manager Ramesh Menon in a statement today.
Zaid is speculated to re-enter active politics at the press conference tomorrow by joining DAP. He had previously declined to confirm the speculation.
The press conference was originally to be held at RSC’s function room at its Kiara Annexe, but has since been relocated to Zaid’s residence at Petaling Jaya.
Earlier today, Zaid had claimed that he had made a booking at RSC sometime last week, but was informed that the booking has been cancelled about 6pm yesterday.
He claimed that the decision was due to political pressure.
“We originally booked Royal Selangor Club and we have paid for it. Then yesterday, we got this call that they wouldn’t allow us the use of it because they have got instructions from somewhere,” he told Malaysiakini when contacted this morning.
He said the venue was booked for a press conference together with Parti Pribumi Bersatu (Bersatu) chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad and DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, but declined to comment on the topic of the press conference.-Mkini
