Opposition, civil society leaders ink Save Malaysia initiative

Some 50 top opposition and civil society leaders today signed the “Save Malaysia” initiative, led by DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang.

The Save Malaysia round table discussion today, in conjunction with the 114th birth anniversary of the country’s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, as its name suggests, was held to “Save Malaysia from its status as a global kleptocracy and from becoming a failed state”.

At the event in Bandar Utama today, Lim said ordinary Malaysians, including Umno and PAS members, must come forward to save Malaysia if Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s government as well as PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang were not prepared to do so..

“This is why this Save Malaysia round table has been convened,” the Gelang Patah MP said in his speech.

Lim added that he believe Tunku Abdul Rahman “would be horrified” if he were able to be here today, to witness how Malaysia has become a global kleptocracy and heading towards a failed state.

“In fact, the second and third prime ministers would have also been horrified by the trajectory of the nation under the sixth prime minister, Najib.”

Today’s event saw Pakatan Harapan’s number crunchers, DAP lawmaker Tony Pua and PKR parliamentarian Rafizi Ramli presenting on topics related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd as well as other financial scandals.

After which Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and  Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, shared their views on ways to save Malaysia.

They were joined by civil society representatives who then signed a copy of the initiative, which Lim said was to be collected by Pakatan Harapan chief secretary Saifuddin Abdullah.

This is the second of such similar initiatives to "Save Malaysia".

In March last year, various leaders from the opposition and civil society including Mahathir and former deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin signed the Citizens’ Declaration to urge for the resignation of Najib as premier.
