Malacca Umno politician to be charged with corruption Tuesday

An Umno politician close to the Malacca state administration is expected to be charged with corruption on Tuesday, a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission source confirms.
The MACC last November seized more than RM150 million in cash, vehicles, assets and documents from the politician in its investigations into money laundering.
This comes after a state executive council member in neighbouring Johor, Abd Latif Bandi, resigned after he was charged with corruption last week.
The source told Malaysiakini the politician is linked to a high ranking goverment official.
Among items reportedly seized from the politician last year include RM12.6 million in cash in bank accounts, 56 land titles beloning to Yayasan Melaka in Sabah and six State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) files related to land reclamation projects and seven vehicles, including a Toyota Vellfire and a BMW.
The anti-graft body also seized two Toyota FJ Cruiser four-wheel drive vehicles, worth about RM200,000 each, it was reported.
The man was released on bail of RM100,000 after being detained for 24 hours, after which he resumed his duties in the administration.
He was after that suspended from duty in the administration, but appointed to a position at Tangga Batu Umno service centre.
Tangga Batu is Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron's constituency.
The politician was also announced as Malacca Umno and BN special functions secretary, the New Straits Times reported.
Idris justified the appointment by saying that the man is someone who can help the party on the ground.
"He can help place flags on poles and take care of our activities. Let him work for the party and let the court judge (whether he is guilty of corruption)," Idris is quoted as saying.

Commenting on the New Straits Times report, Idris said the politician is not appointed into a formal administrative position, but was only instructed to ensure the party machinery activities goes smoothly.
"He is just appointed to ensure all BN flags and banners are placed according to regulations.
"I don't know why this is such a big deal since it is not a leaderhsip or admistrative position, but merely to to oversee (operations)," he is reported as saying by Bernama this afternoon.- Mkini
