Opponents of Act 355 may suffer Ahok's fate, warns PAS

PAS has issued a warning to those who oppose the Islamist party's bid to strengthen syariah courts in Malaysia by drawing a comparison to the outcome of the Jakarta governor election in Indonesia.
Information chief Nasrudin Hassan said Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama's failure to retain his governor post signalled the rise of Islam in the republic.
The ethnic Chinese Christian governor had come under fire for allegedly insulting Islam, and massive protests were held against him.
Noting that there is a lesson in this for Malaysian politicians, Nasrudin said: “When you insult Islam, do not think Muslims would not react by rejecting you as a leader. The Jakarta governor election proves this.”
The PAS leader pointed out that a similar sentiment was on the rise among Muslims in Malaysia with regard to the move to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355).
“This issue has opened the eyes of the people as to who is really the foe, and who is truly the friend who wants to champion Islam.
“Therefore, a similar uprising awaits in the coming general election,” he added in a statement.

PAS' fomer ally DAP has been the most vociferous among those opposing the amendments, which some have described as being more of a political as opposed to religious move.
On the final day (April 6) of the last Dewan Rakyat meeting, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had tabled the motion on the amendments.
However, Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia deferred the debate to the next meeting, which is scheduled to start on July 24.- Mkini
