BN postpones naming Pujut by-election candidate

The Kuching High Court will deliver a judgement today on an originating summons filed by former Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon challenging the state assembly’s decision to disqualify him as an assemblyman on May 12.

PETALING JAYA: Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) yesterday postponed naming its candidate for the Pujut by-election.
State BN chairman and Chief Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg, who was expected to announce the BN candidate at the PBB headquarters in Jalan Bako, Kuching, at 3pm, cancelled the scheduled press conference, reported the Borneo Post Online.
It is believed that the announcement was cancelled because the Kuching High Court will deliver today (June 17) a judgement on an originating summons filed by former Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon.
Ting filed the summons in the High Court on June 7 to challenge the state assembly’s decision to disqualified him as an assemblyman on May 12 when he lost his seat in a 70-10 vote in favour of a ministerial motion.
Ting was disqualified over an allegation that he had acquired Australian citizenship in 2012.
The Election Commission has scheduled June 20 as nomination day for the Pujut by-election and July 4 as polling day.
In the May 2016 state polls, Ting won the Pujut seat with a majority of 1,759 votes in a four-cornered fight against direct BN candidate Hii King Chiong, PAS’ Jofri Jaraie and Fong Pau Teck, who contested as an independent candidate.
Fong, a former Pujut assemblyman, contested after DAP decided not to field him in the election. -FMT
