MASSIVE GERRYMANDERING & VOTE CHEATING IN GE14: ALL IT TAKES IS ‘SIMPLE MAJORITY’ TO RAM IN NEW BOUNDARIES – EC CHIEF CONFIRMS

SELAYANG – The existing electoral boundaries will be used in the event that the next general election is held before the redelineation exercise is completed, said Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah.
“If GE14 comes first, we will postpone the redelineation exercise.
“Let’s say that GE14 happens tomorrow, then we will use the old boundaries because the new boundaries have not been gazetted yet,” he told reporters after attending an EC programme at the Selayang Community College.
He said the EC would have to wait for the outcome of all court cases that had been filed over the matter.
In October last year, the Selangor government filed court papers for a judicial review to challenge the redelineation exercise.
In April, four voters in Melaka filed a similar court petition against the EC.
Mohd Hashim said even if the courts sided with the EC, appeals were still an option.
He added that Parliament would also have to vote on the redelineation proposal.
“The matter has not been brought to Parliament or debated yet.
“Only if Parliament agrees with a simple majority can the EC implement the new boundaries,” he said.

Mohd Hashim added that there was a perception that a political party intended to use the new boundaries for its benefit.
“Our perception is different. After eight years, we decided that there is a need for redelineation.
“If we don’t make new boundaries after 40 years, it would be wrong,” he said.
At an earlier dialogue session with Selangor community college students, Mohd Hashim said there were 18 million Malaysians eligible to vote.
However, 3.8 million had yet to register, the majority of them being youths.
The EC hopes to register up to 135,000 new voters via its Generasi Penggerak Demokrasi voter education programme, which is being run at 180 institutions of higher learning.
